In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.
The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; TED Translators, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established The Audacious Project that takes a collaborative approach to funding ideas with the potential to create change at thrilling scale; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self- organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
TEDxNorthwich is an independently organized TED event, under a licence granted by TED.
Our aim is to curate ideas worth sharing, in Northwich, which evoke curiosity and start a conversation.
Northwich is a fast-growing town steeped in history, events and community. A community that can be seen supporting each other and the many causes that touches it. Volunteers abound, eager to champion ideas, events, and charities to their deserved success. It was only natural that TEDx found its home in Northwich.
Longtime fans of TED & TEDx talks, Sam Newey and Catherine Sandland’s TEDx paths converged at TEDxNantwich’s inaugural event in 2016.
Giving stage to Northwich speaker, Catherine Sandland, with her exceptional TEDx talk – Stand up. Speak up. Stand out! Sam Newey was amongst a team of supporters in the audience, with Karen Rogers.
Completely inspired by the whole experience, 2 hours later, 3 excited women and a scribbled note across the table simply conveying…..’we are the perfect town for this, we are bringing TEDx to Northwich’…
The vision of providing a platform for local Ideas Worth Spreading, to be shared with the world and start conversations, enabled the birth of TEDxNorthwich
While TEDxNorthwich is a testament to the town’s vibrant and forward-thinking spirit, it’s essential to understand Northwich’s rich history that laid the foundation for such community-driven initiatives.
The history of Northwich can be traced back to the Roman period. As they moved North, from what had once intended to be the capital of Britain – namely Chester – Northwich was of interest for its salt and strategic river crossings. The river and salt still playing a key part to the town today. Neighbouring Winsford boasts the largest working slat mine in the UK and Northwich the hosts of a number of large family events throughout the year including the infamous River Festival, attracting fiercely, but highly fun and competitive teams to row their Dragon Boats against each other whilst another race across the town attracts some of the wackiest and outrageous soapbox creations hurtling down Castle Hill at the annual Krazy Races. Markets in Northwich can be traced back to 1535 and today proudly facilitates a monthly outdoor market throughout the town.
History observed and modern developments have yielded ‘Northwich the accolade on being one of the best places to live’, according to The Sunday Times.
Located about 18 miles east of Chester and 15 miles south of Warrington, with the Rivers Weaver and Dane running through the town, Northwich offers a superb combination of vibrant culture and glorious countryside.
